We didn't expect these in Oaxaca, Mexico (behind the scene no.2)
Share
Dear friends,
As we step into the end of the 2nd month of our Montessori gap term in Mexico, we'd like to share a few unexpected discoveries in Oaxaca:
- Nobody smokes: we have seen close to zero smokers (single digits in total) in the 2 months we are here! Granted, maybe the smokers come out at night and we are usually all tucked in by 8pm. Mexico apparently has one of the strictest smoking bans in the world.
- Few people speaks English: most people's English is worse than our Spanish at this point (sí, habla un poco de español). It forces us to learn Spanish - or be creative with body language.
- Water actually runs out: Oaxaca is experiencing severe water shortage, the supply of water by the government is sporadic. We experienced it first hand when the tap / toilet stopped working one day! We ended up calling for private water suppliers (called "pipas") to come and fill in the cistern (that's another thing we've never seen before - a water storage in the ground).
- Most polite drivers: Considering the fact that driving tests are not required here (that's right!), the drivers here are very gentle and courteous. They are yet to learn the English trick of saying "thank you" with your hazard lights, but a waving hand is just as effective!

Finally, happy Mental Health Day! Here's a recommendation of my all time favourite book for Body Positivity that I've gifted to many friends before. Ironically I'm not typing out the name for fear of being blocked 😂
It talks and draws openly about different body and body parts. Young children will find it enthralling, and it sends a beautiful, affirming message for teenager / preteen as well (plus adults!). Get yours from UK(£10.49), US ($16.99), Canada (C$ 21.99) (thank you for clicking through the affiliate link).
Have a love week.
Best wishes,
Eva x
