Classified cards are fantastic language materials for enriching language with young children from birth to reading.
Good classified cards are:
- Realistic: it is a realistic photo or drawing of the object, not an animated, artistically created version (they are lovely but makes it harder for children to recognise at this stage).
- Isolated the object - so that child can associate the word with the object
- Realistic sense of scale - in a set of cards, the objects are roughly to scale as practical as possible i.e. an elephant is not the same size as a duck. This gives children helpful information about the sizes.
In AMI training, we learnt to make classified cards. In a classroom it is constantly in use, and teachers are always making them to meet the children's interest.
It is definitely possible to make at home, but does take a lot of attention, and time to make it right (Montessori classroom assistant spend lots of time on making them, as they are forever in demand and takes effort to get it right!)
